Patient Participation Groups

Liverpool Primary Care Trust is eager to ensure that local people are actively involved in deciding how the health services they use should develop. Patient Participation Groups give patients, GPs and practice staff an opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and information, and then take action.

Most Patient Participation Groups hold regular meetings where discussions focus around issues such as services their GP provides and health issues of local concern or interest.

A group’s activities might include holding health information events, consulting with patients about their experience of the health service, or producing a newsletter to let people know about the group and the services that the practice offers. Patient Participation Groups also provide an opportunity for local people to be actively involved in the planning of new health services and the development of existing services.  For details of groups in your area please call 0151 296 7433 or email the Community Engagement team

National Association for Patient Participation

The National Association for Patient Participation (NAPP) supports the establishment of Patient Participation Groups. You can find out more about its work and about Patient Participation Groups on the NAPP website.

Developing your own Patient Participation Group

For patients wanting to set up their own PPG, a handy guide has been developed by Liverpool PCT. Some of the topics covered are the duty to consult and involve patients and the wider community in the development of local health services, details on other local Patient Participation Groups and organisations that can offer support and training to Patient Participation Groups. Please click here to download a copy.

Our Communication for All, Handy Hints Manual includes practical suggestions for getting your message across effectively. Whether you are writing, talking on the phone, or speaking face to face, the manual gives useful advice about how to communicate clearly. It also provides guidance on when, how and what to translate in written form. Click here for a flyer template that you can adapt and use to advertise the meetings of your group.
